Bordeaux is considered by many as synonymous with fine wines. The vastness of the region, coupled with the array of soils and micro-climates have established it as a region of great diversity. At a basic level, the varietal split for red grapes could be considered predominately cabernet sauvignon on the left bank and merlot on the right with cabernet franc and petit verdot weaving their way through the blends. For the whites, the focus is on semillon, sauvignon blanc and a little muscadelle.
But there is change is afoot. Due in part to the effects of climate change (something no wine region will be able to avoid indefinitely), shifting preference for some varieties over others and surprising yet significant changes to permissible varieties.
