This webinar course examines some classic confusions in blind wine tasting: wines, varieties and regions that are easy to confuse for one another. In each webinar we will taste a set of wines that can all be confused for each other, and tease out how to tell each apart. Using insights from a structural approach to wine tasting, as well as the usual discussion of flavours, the course will be invaluable for those wishing to improve their blind tasting skills.
In this webinar we will taste and discuss four wines made from different red Bordeaux varieties that can easily be confused for another. We will discuss what their main identifying characteristics are, and how to distinguish them. We will taste the wines below, with suggestions for wines to purchase in parentheses.
Participants should taste wines from whichever regions they often confuse, especially those from outside Europe. But the suggestions below will draw out the differences clearly, especially if all wines tasted are of roughly the same price:
- Cabernet Franc (Chile/Argentina/Loire Valley)
- Merlot (Chile)
- Carmenère (Chile)
- Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile)"
