This webinar course examines some classic confusions in blind wine tasting: wines, varieties and regions that are easy to confuse for one another. In each webinar we will taste a set of wines that can all be confused for each other, and tease out how to tell each apart. Using insights from a structural approach to wine tasting, as well as the usual discussion of flavours, the course will be invaluable for those wishing to improve their blind tasting skills.
In this webinar we will taste and discuss four important European red wines that can easily be confused for another. We will discuss what their main identifying characteristics are, and how to distinguish them. We will taste the wines below, with suggestions for wines to purchase in parentheses.
- Rioja (Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva)
- Sangiovese (Chianti - especially if your Rioja is a Crianza; or Brunello - if your Rioja is Reserva or Gran Reserva)
- Nebbiolo (Langhe - if your Sangiovese is Chianti; or Barbaresco or Barolo - if your Sangiovese is Chianti Riserva, Brunello or Brunello Riserva)
- Xinomavro (Greece)"
