Pepe Mendoza is a man on a mission to drive the idea of terroir and authenticity in the Alicante region of South-Eastern Spain.
For 25 years Pepe worked with international varieties, but he has now chosen to focus on local varieties, using native grapes such as monastrell, alicante bouschet, moscatel and macabeo to make his flagship wines. He says that those varieties ‘give us the greatest singularity, those that represent the rosemary, the thyme, the pine and chamomile scents and flavours of our lands.’
Organics, sustainability and traditional techniques are all in his set of superpowers and he is proving a force to be reckoned with.
