Vineyard Description

Nestled on a sunny hillside with stunning views of Mount’s Bay, Polgoon Vineyard is a standout among UK vineyards. Combining a passion for winemaking with Cornwall’s unique climate, Polgoon produces award-winning English wines and ciders that reflect the beauty of their coastal home. Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or just curious, Polgoon offers a warm welcome and a fantastic experience.

A Vineyard with a Rich History

The story of Polgoon began in 2002 when John and Kim Coulson, former fish merchants from Newlyn, purchased the land. Once a flower farm, it had been left derelict for over a decade. Despite Cornwall’s challenging weather, which includes heavy rainfall and unpredictable growing conditions, the Coulsons planted 3,500 vines in 2004, including Rondo, Pinot Noir Précoce, Seyval Blanc, and Ortega.

Their determination paid off quickly, with their first vintage in 2006 earning the UKVA Trophy for Best Still Rosé. However, the unpredictable Cornish weather proved a tough adversary, with the 2007 harvest devastated by poor conditions. This setback led to a pivotal decision: the Coulsons turned to apples from their orchard, producing cider as a complement to their wine. Polgoon’s ciders have since become a key part of their operation, winning numerous awards alongside their wines.
