Vineyard Description

Established in 1972, Chilford Hall Vineyard is one of England’s oldest vineyards, producing award-winning wines amidst the stunning rolling hills of Cambridgeshire. Renowned for its picturesque landscape, rich history, and exceptional wines, Chilford Hall offers a truly unique experience for wine enthusiasts.

A Legacy of Winemaking and Art: The Alper Family

The Chilford Hall Estate has been owned by the Alper family since 1966 when it was purchased by entrepreneur Sam Alper, a visionary with a passion for wine, art, and sculpture. Sam’s creativity has left its mark across the estate, which remains a captivating destination full of charm and character.

In 1972, Sam planted the first vines at Chilford Hall, establishing a vineyard that has since grown into a 20-acre expanse producing some of England’s finest wines. This enduring family legacy continues today with Chilford Hall’s reputation for excellence firmly rooted in its history.

The Vineyard: Prime Terroir and Expert Craftsmanship

Chilford Hall’s vineyard is set on south-west-facing slopes, perfectly positioned to soak up the summer sun. The vines grow in free-draining, flinty soil over chalk, a composition reminiscent of the Champagne region in France. This combination of ideal terroir and meticulous vineyard management by Mark Barnes, the estate’s Vineyard Manager and Winemaker since 2006, ensures the production of high-quality grapes year after year.

The vineyard cultivates 9 grape varieties suited to England’s cool climate, including:

  • Müller-Thurgau
  • Schönburger
  • Ortega
  • Reichensteiner
  • Pinot Noir
  • Rondo
  • Regent
  • Dornfelder
  • Siegerrebe

Each harvest is crafted exclusively into wines made from grapes grown on the estate, resulting in vintages that are as unique as the seasons that shaped them.
