Resource Overview

Herdade do Esporão is renowned for both their wines and olive oils. Located in the Alentejo region of Portugal, they boast an impressive range of grape varieties (many indigenous) grown on schist clay and granite soils. Their 460 hectares of vineyards are located to receive many hours of sunshine a day and are situated surrounding a large lake that moderates the continental-Mediterranean climate. The winemaking team, led by David Baverstock, split the production between the more everyday wines, which are fermented in large stainless-steel tanks with automatic pumping, and their premium ranges that use smaller tanks with robotic presses to intensify the maceration and extraction.

As a family-run company, they produce their wines with integrity, creativity and respect for the land that sustains their vineyards. As well as focusing on producing excellent wines they are also committed to improving their energy performance and the impact they have on the environment.

We are delighted that they have been crowned a winner with their Esporão Monte Velho Tinto Alentejano 2019 in our 2020 Wine Champions (our Director of Wine, Pierre Mansour, noted during the tastings that this was the best vintage of this ever-reliable wine he'd ever tasted!) and we invite you all to join us in discovering more about Herdade do Esporão and their wines.
