Clausthaler invented the alcohol-free lager category in 1979 and deserves credit for that. Brewed using a patented process that prevents alcohol forming rather than removing it afterwards, it pours like a proper lager and smells like one too. The taste is where it starts to show its age — middle of the road, with a slight chemical edge that the newer craft options don't have. It's not bad. It's available everywhere and reliably inoffensive. But in a category that has moved fast, Clausthaler has been left behind. Worth knowing, not worth prioritising.
